Chopstick Etiquette

Chopsticks were said to have originated when a Chinese farmer used two twigs to pick up his food because it was very hot and his hands were dirty. Today, most Chinese people eat their food with chopsticks. But, there are a set of rules that one must follow when using chopsticks. For example, chopsticks must be held in the right hand. The host will have the longest chopsticks, because the host is the one that reaches for food and places it on the guests’ plates. Also, children use smaller and shorter chopsticks. Never place your chopsticks upright in a bowl, because incense sticks are placed in bowls the same way during a funeral. In addition, it is considered rude to stab your food with chopsticks or to dig for the food you want with chopsticks. You should not lick your chopsticks, since you might be eating from the same bowl as other people. Making noises with your chopsticks or drumming them on the table is also bad manners, because it seems like you are a beggar. Some people even believe that dropping your chopsticks on the floor will bring bad luck or make you poor. Also, do not wave your chopsticks in the air or point them at others, since chopsticks are considered extensions of your hands. Chopsticks should be kept at the same length when eating. When you are finished with your meal, place your chopsticks across your bowl to signify that you are done. Chopsticks can also serve as gifts for other people.
